2003 – Mosport
VARAC hosted our first race event where the Kastner Cup was awarded, back then we called it the International Triumph Challenge. Little did we know what the future would bring, an annual event Triumph powered cars! The venue was the famed Mosport International Raceway, now known as Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada.
Several racers cancelled due to a significant outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in the Toronto area that summer, but we still managed to get 17 Triumph powered cars to the track. When the green flag waived for the feature race, we saw 15 Triumphs and a handful of MG’s running for glory.
The day belonged to the uncle jack racing team. Son Tony holds the honor of taking the top podium spot on the very first Kastner Cup race, and his father Jack had a inspiring drive and came home with the Kastner Cup! It looked like Jack might have been sitting out the race as he developed some sort of issue and couldn’t get New Blue started! The car finally fired but he lost his grid position and started started dead last. In the 10 lap race he passed the entire field but for 3 cars, finishing fourth overall and turning the fastest lap of the race. Kas recognized Jack’s effort as driving beyond expectations, and awarded him the trophy.
