2003 – Mosport

VARAC hosted our first Kastner Cup race event, and the venue was the famed Mosport International Raceway, now known as Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada.

Several racers cancelled due to a significant outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in the Toronto area that summer, but we still managed to get 17 Triumph powered cars to the track. When the green flag waived for the feature race, we saw 15 Triumphs and a handful of MG’s running for glory.

The day belonged to the uncle jack racing team. Son Tony holds the honor of taking the top podium spot on the very first Kastner Cup, and his father Jack had a miraculous drive and came home with the Kastner Cup! It looked like Jack might have been sitting out the race as he developed some sort of carb issue and was seen wrenching up until the last minute making the necessary repairs. He made it to the grid before the cars got released, but was too late to take his grid position. He started dead last and in 10 laps he passed the entire field but for 3 cars, finishing fourth overall and turning the fastest lap of the race. Kas recognized Jack’s effort as driving beyond expectations, and awarded him the trophy.
